The Best TV Shows to Enhance Your Vocabulary to an Elite Level

Jul 30 / EliteVocab

If you love to binge-watch TV, you might occasionally feel guilty about being a couch potato. It’s time to let go of that guilt!

In fact, watching certain TV shows can actually enhance your vocabulary, teaching you elite words that can be used to further your career and personal prospects. Rather than catering to the lowest common denominator, these shows choose to challenge viewers with powerful words, phrases, and forms of communication, helping you absorb new vocabulary and concepts.

If you want to follow up on those words and ideas, the EliteVocab platform can help you develop the vocabulary of the top 1% in just 30 days so that you are never left to wonder what your favorite TV character just said and meant. In the meantime, here is your list of must-see TV if you want to enhance your vocabulary to an elite level:

1.
Succession. The story of the very wealthy and very dysfunctional Roy family, “Succession” highlights a cast of powerful characters, all vying to control the family’s global media conglomerate. While the series shows that money can’t buy happiness, it does seem to indicate that wealth can buy you a more elevated vocabulary—not to mention some very colorful insults (and you will likely learn a creative new swear word or two, since this is an HBO show).

2. Billions. You get more wealth and corruption with “Billions,” which tells the story of a hedge fund manager as he continues to accumulate power in the high-stakes world of high finance. Not afraid of crossing the line even as he’s being chased down by prosecutors, the main character displays an impressive command of the English language, as does his main adversary. Again, you will have the chance to listen to and learn the vocabulary of the elite.

3. Suits. The show that made Meghan Markle famous before she became Duchess of Sussex, “Suits” features a fictional New York City law firm, home to a character with a photographic memory, who gets hired despite being a college dropout who never even attended law school. Showing high society and the less glamorous world of drug deals, “Suits” boasts a smart cast of characters who aren’t afraid to use big words to intimidate others and get what they want.

4. House of Cards. Politics meets ambition meets intrigue meets blackmail in this Netflix series featuring Kevin Spacey (who was written out of the series in its last season, following his real-life scandals) and Robin Penn Wright. In this case, viewers are treated to a blend of Southern charm with political maneuverings, and again have the opportunity to learn some colorful new language and ideas from the political realm.

5. House. A medical drama that features Dr. Gregory House, a misanthropic medical genius who is himself an addict, “House” showcases an impressive range of medical and personal language and vocabulary words. You won’t learn how to perform surgery, but you will learn how to speak to persuade and impress.

The list doesn’t end there. If you haven’t checked out “Game of Thrones,” “Deadwood,” “Downton Abbey (for a British flair),” “The West Wing,” “Homeland” or “The News Room,” you have plenty of great TV and great fodder for learning some elite new vocabulary words. On the other hand, if you have been watching a lot of reality TV these days, you might want to switch the channel or invest the next month with EliteVocab to develop your personal and professional vocabulary.

Better than must-see TV, EliteVocab is a science-backed platform that teaches you the power words and phrases you might hear in your favorite shows. Each self-paced lesson offers assessments and feedback and you will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the program.

What are you watching and loving these days? What words have you learned from your favorite TV shows? Regardless, it’s always nice to know that America’s favorite pastime can also be a chance to learn, discover and grow.
